Vegetable Transplants
Nova has similar characteristics to Valentine (crack resistant, size and produces over a long period) and it has nice flavour. It is described by Johnny’s as follows: “Exclusive! Beautiful orange grape tomato. Borne on long trusses, Nova is a bright orange color with excellent, sweet flavour. Firm, meaty, 20–22 gm fruits resist cracking.” It is a vigorous indeterminate which means it should be staked, trellised or caged and pruned for best results. Fruit ripens over an extended period. One plant per 3.5” container.

*New Offering
This new (to me) variety was offered by Annapolis Seeds. Here’s what Owen Bridge, the owner of Annapolis Seeds has to say: “Farm favourite cherry tomato! Sweet and intensely flavourful, it hits all the right notes when you pop one in your mouth. I’m a fan of their dense texture and split-resistant skins too. I would dare compare it to the famed hybrid Sungold in terms of sheer deliciousness; definitely the best open pollinated gold cherry I’ve ever encountered. Long hanging trusses of fruit on indeterminate vines. Grown by Annapolis Seeds. This variety was shared with us by friend and fellow seed saver Silvana Castillo (La Finquita Seeds). She has been selecting it for in Nova Scotia's north shore, where it developed a cult following of all who tasted it.” I’m excited to try Silvana’s Gold!

Delicious determinate grape. This variety was introduced in 2024. It is a well-behaved plant with tasty fruit. Here’s what Johnny’s Seeds has to say about Candy Bell: “This is a labour-saving determinate grape with great taste and is a manageable plant. Candy Bell maintains a good fruit size and has medium-high crack tolerance. The ideal size (15 gm.) and shape for a grape. Slightly open plant habit makes harvests easier, and little to no pruning is required.”

Cutie-patootie best describes Tidy Treats! Tidy Treats is considered the best cherry tomato for patio gardens. It is a neat, compact tomato ideal for tight spaces. It is tasty and high-yielding, with a polite habit easily tamed with the use of a standard tomato cage. Good snacking size (6–8 gm) and sweet flavour. It is nice to set near a well-travelled door or path so that you can grab a handful on your way by. It is only recommended for container growing. One plant per 3.5” container.

An even better Big Beef! One of the best-loved beefsteaks, with improved flavour, colour, and adaptability. Sweeter than the original Big Beef. Crimson gene lends a richer red internal colour. Very similar in size, shape, and yield to Big Beef. It is indeterminate so it should be staked, trellised, or caged and pruned for best results. The fruit ripens over an extended period of time. One plant per 3.5” container.

We grew Marbonne for the first time in 2025 and we loved the flavour; an excellent sandwich tomato. It is described by Johnny’s Seeds as follows: “Exclusive! Superlative flavour and appearance. Marbonne is a hybrid version of the long popular French heirloom Marmande, but with improved disease resistance and vigour. Beautiful, deep red, ribbed tomatoes are borne on healthy plants. Flavour is among the best with smooth, soft texture. Very early (69 days) and high yields of 7-9 oz. fruit.” This tomato is also a great choice to be grown in your greenhouse. It is indeterminate so it should be staked, trellised, or caged, and pruned for best results. Fruit ripens over an extended period. One plant per 3.5” container.

I have grown Amish Paste for several seasons and like its flavour and meaty texture. It is also a great tomato for preserving. It is described by Johnny’s Seeds as follows: “A longtime favourite heirloom plum. Large for a sauce tomato, Amish Paste's slightly irregular plum to strawberry-shaped fruits avg. 8-12 oz. with excellent flavour. These meaty tomatoes are good in salads and great for processing. A Slow Food USA Ark of Taste variety. USDA Certified Organic.” It is an indeterminate variety which means it should be staked, trellised, or caged, and pruned for best results. We like Defiant’s cluster growing habit and flavour. Defiant is an early, mid-size slicer with high resistance to late blight and intermediate resistance to early blight. The 6-8 oz, globe-shaped fruit are smooth and medium-firm with good texture. Deep red internal and external colour. High-yielding, medium-sized plants are widely adaptable. It is a determinate variety which means it does not need pruning and may be grown with light support (a standard tomato cage will do nicely). The fruit ripens within a concentrated time-period. One plant per 3.5” container.

We are trying this variety for the first time in 2026. This is what Johnny’s Seeds has to say about Mountain Fresh: “The most widely-grown market tomato in the East and Midwest. Able to tolerate cool and wet conditions, this big red tomato produces attractive, 8-16 oz. slicers with good flavor. Developed by Dr. Randy Gardner at North Carolina State University. Vigorous plants provide plenty of leaf cover.” It is a determinate variety which means it does not need pruning and may be grown with light support (a standard tomato cage will do nicely). The fruit ripens within a concentrated time-period. One plant per 3.5” container.

Carmen is a sweet Italian pepper. It is early, adaptable, and notably sweet (especially when fully red-ripe) with a shapely tapered silhouette. Carmen begins green, then deepens to a beautiful carmine at maturity. Excellent roasted, grilled and in salads. We have been growing Carmen since 2020; it’s on our repeat list for a reason. Peppers love the sun and heat.

We have been growing Hungarian Hot Wax since 2021. It’s a beauty!
Hungarian Hot Wax is a widely adaptable, productive pepper, even in cool weather. It is a yellow hot pepper with 5 1/2" x 1 1/2" smooth, waxy fruits tapering to a point. It is easy to stuff and to peel after roasting and is thick-fleshed for frying. Its sunset-ripening peppers change from yellow to orange to red and make the prettiest pickled peppers.
This variety also freezes nicely. Any that we are not going to use fresh, we put into the freezer and take out as needed throughout the winter months. They keep well with no effort. We also make pickled peppers and jelly with this variety.
Peppers love sun and heat. One plant per 3.5” container.

We trialed Red Ember in 2021; it’s a keeper!
This is a versatile and flavourful cayenne. Tremendous flavour on first bite, with warm heat that lingers. Thick enough for a bit of crunch when eaten fresh, but thin enough to dry easily. Just enough heat to satisfy "pepper heads"—who can eat the peppers whole—but mild enough to slice thinly onto a salad. Makes excellent powder, flakes, and hot sauce. Also nice fried or in stir fries. Matures early. High-yielding plants. Fruits avg. 4–4 1/2" long. AAS Winner in 2018.
This variety freezes nicely. Any that we are not going to use fresh, we put into the freezer and take out as needed throughout the winter months. They keep well with no effort. We also make hot pickled peppers and jelly with this variety.

This is a new variety that we would like to trial in 2026. Here’s what Johnny’s Seeds has to say about Altiplano: “Large-fruited serrano. An impressive size at 4 1/2-5" long, Altiplano peppers are faster to harvest than types with smaller fruits. Traditional serrano flavor and pungency. Medium-large plants.”

Czech Black is a new variety for us in 2026. This seed was a gift from my good friend Brenda. The seed was sourced from Annapolis Seeds. This is what Annapolis Seeds has to say about Czech Black: “Sweet, richly flavoured and very mildly hot. Highly ornamental plants with purple-black tinged leaves. They bear a profusion of jalapeno-like peppers, starting shiny black and ripening to an unreal deep red. Makes a great spicy paprika powder.” At the time of writing, the leaves are a very beautiful dark colour on the baby plants. It is easy to spot Czech Black amongst the other pepper varieties.

2020 was the first year we grew eggplant and the same year that this seed variety was offered. Annina is a spineless, variegated, purple-striped Italian type with glossy skin and is an attractive teardrop shape. The plants themselves are pretty; the fruits are gorgeous looking like they were painted by hand and polished. On average, the fruits are 7-8" long by 3-4" in diameter. Each year Annina produces several fruits per plant in our greenhouse. Eggplant is a sun and heat lover. One plant per 3.5” container.

We have grown Orient Express in our greenhouse for several years. It is a tall, handsome plant that produces many delicious fruits from early to late season.

Striped Armenian, also known as “Painted Serpent” have a unique appearance and excellent flavor. They are slightly fuzzy, slightly ridged with alternating dark and light green stripes. My favourite field tomato! Valentine is always the first variety to begin fruiting and last to stop at heavy frost. It hangs with fruit all season long. It’s a delicious, high-lycopene grape with a deep red colour and an unusually rich flavour. Valentine marries the best of wild-type tomato genetics with flavourful high-performing strains. Avg. fruit weight 12-14 gm. For best flavour, harvest when fruits are deep red. Long shelf life. Resistant to cracking. AAS winner in 2018. It is an indeterminate variety; stake, trellis, or cage and prune for best results. One plant per 3.5” container.
