The Tidal Wave Petunias were superstars once again in 2025!  I am excited to be growing these petunias for our community flower bins once again this season.  Last year, Tidal Wave Silver and Tidal Wave Red Velour put on quite a show and did super well despite the harsh conditions at the head of the Cove.  I am growing these two varieties again and adding Tidal Wave Purple.  Purple is a new colour in the Tidal Wave series. What I love about Tidal Wave: gorgeous colour, vigorous, robust and best of all, dead-heading is not necessary.  Once they begin blooming they go hard all season; they were still blooming heavy when I ended the bins in the Fall.

 The seed for these plants was purchased from Vesey’s Seeds.  Here’s what Vesey’s has to say about Tidal Wave Petunias: “Terrific flower power with oceans of vibrant 2" blooms cover these go-to plants, that do it all. Double Click Snowpuff has unique, double flower, fluffy blooms.  The plants grow to approximately 5’ tall.  The flowers are pure white with a small percentage displaying a soft blush of pink.  I have used them in countless wedding bouquets.  Provide 12” of space.  Two plants per 3.5” container.

Cupcakes Cosmos are irresistible!  The pale blush petals on the large blooms are fused together forming a teacup shape.  The edges of the blooms look like they have been cut with pinking shears. A percentage of the flowers have lovely, tufted centers.  They grow to 5’.  Provide 12” of space. Two plants per 3.5” container.

Xanthos are another gorgeous variety of Cosmos!  She has delicate, pale yellow flowers that are uniquely ruffled and have a subtle inner collar and pale throat.  Her blossoms have a dark yellow eye encircled by tiny, fringed petals with pale serrated tips.  It is an early bloomer. 

Give 12” of space in full sun.  Two plants per 3.5” container.

Rubenza’s blooms are a unique, elegant cranberry red colour but as they mature, they fade to an antique rose with hints of amber.  The plants grow to approximately 3’ tall.  Provide 12” of space.  Two plants per 3.5” container.

The seeds for these beauties were given to me by Aunt Amy Mason.  They have forever been a favourite in her garden.  They are swoon worthy in an old-fashioned pink.  Hollyhoks are biennials.  Two plants per 3.5” container.

Mission Giant was new to me in 2025.  These are not your regular marigolds.  The lovely lemon yellow, chrysanthemum-like flowers are 3” across with a bushy appearance. The stunning blooms are resistant to poor weather; the hard acid green eye is tightly compacted so water sits on top of the bloom rather than soaking into the bloom and causing rot.  Flowers start with a bright green eye and then puff out into a full flower.  They would make an excellent back of a border plant.  They were lovely cut flowers with a nice vase life.  Mission Giant grew to 3.5’ for me.  They are heavy with their blooms so I recommend providing support.  Two plants per 3.5” container.

What to say about lisianthus? She is a show-stopper, Queen of the Cut Flower Garden!  One of my favourite cut flowers that has been a staple in my garden since I began.  I have been asked for several years to provide lisianthus transplants so this year I doubled my order and have several to share in a variety of colours.  Lisianthus are difficult to start from seed so I purchase them as plugs from Jolly Farmer.

Lisianthus flowers have a rose look without the thorns and a wonderful vase life of two to three weeks.  Plant them out when the soil is still cool, ideally below 12C.  They can handle temperatures down to -5c and prefer cooler temperatures when they are establishing themselves in the soil.

Airy 5”-6”flower clusters on strong, sturdy stems make an excellent statement at the back of beds. Open pollinate, re-seeds itself. Height 48”-72”.

I have not grown Cleome in the past but it is my understanding that it is deer resistant as it has prickly stems, a strong scent, and a somewhat sticky texture.

Two plants per 8” pot.  $15/pot.

Elegant Feathers was new to me last year and I loved it!  It’s a super cool plant growing to 5’.  It is free-standing, upright with a narrow growing habit.  The deer were not interested in it.  I had several growing in the garden and in the perennial beds around the property in full sun and part shade.  They all did well despite the dry conditions.  They are soft to the touch with bright green leaves and small white flowers late in the season.  The foliage turns reddish in Fall. 

I purchased the plugs from Jolly Farmer in NB.

I have grown Kangaroo Paws for several seasons.  Bush Tenacity has yellow blooms on upright, red-haired stems.  They are unique and lovely!  The flowers feel like velvet and are tubular in shape.  They are drought tolerant and bloom right through to frost.  The deer have never been interested in Kangaroo Paws (I grow Kangaroo Paws outside of the fence).  Bush Tenacity was lovely in a late season wedding boutonniere. Height 24”. One plant per 3.5” container.

Few things rival the delicate beauty of a fully blooming Love-In-A-Puff vine. The long, lacey-leaved vines have tiny white blossoms and the most interesting balloon-like green pods that resemble miniature paper lanterns that last for weeks. What is even more magical is that inside each balloon there is a small black seed imprinted with a perfect white heart (save the seeds to plant next year). The photo to the left is from a customer’s garden.  Best grown in a sunny location on a trellis alone so they can show themselves off.  Two plants per 3.5” container.

Mahogany Splendor is a staple in my garden.  It is a beautiful landscape plant and I use it for cut foliage, especially in the Fall.  It grows to 5’ in the garden.  The entire Mahogany Splendor plant is a dramatic deep burgundy colour.  Its serrated leaves resemble those of Japanese maple.  I do not stake these plants and they hold up well in wind and rain.  It is grown primarily for its striking, serrated foliage. It can be brought inside before frost and enjoyed as a houseplant.  The leaves press well.  Allow 2’ of space.  Two plants per 3.5” container.

My favourite…a workhorse and delicious!  Jewel produces bright, 2" blooms in red, orange and yellow and are held above light green foliage. They have a mounded plant habit.  If you have a space that needs brightening up in your garden, nasturtiums are a low-maintenance, excellent choice.  Both the flowers and foliage are edible.  This is my go-to favourite nasturtium variety. The deer do not bother nasturtium. One plant per 3.5” container.

Sweet Alyssum is a magnet for beneficial insects!  It is quick to bloom and is trouble-free.  I grow Sweet Alyssum for our community flower bins and in several spaces at home (the deer aren’t interested).  It holds up well in harsh conditions.  It has dense clusters of wonderfully scented small white flowers growing to 8” tall.  It does well in containers and in the garden and blooms all season.  Several plants per 3.5” container that can be broken apart and planted around.
